When you put on your fresh new pair of heels for the first time, there’s nothing quite like that huge smile and feeling of confidence. There’s also nothing like the existential dread you get when you’re hobbling around an hour into the event, wondering how you’re going to make it through the day in these shoes when your feet are already hurting. How to make heels more comfortable? Is it possible for you to go about in high heels without feeling uncomfortable? Is it some kind of wizardry that only a select few people have? Can you learn to walk in high heels?
Don’t be concerned! I’ve got all of the answers for you! I’ll go through several tried-and-true ways to relieve your foot discomfort and explain why you’re having it in the first place.
Of course, as this is a physiotherapy blog, our prejudiced goal is that you would abandon your high heels in favor of more comfortable footwear. However, we recognize that this is unrealistic for the majority of people, so here are some tried-and-true strategies to help you wear high heels comfortably.
How to make heels more comfortable
1. Heels with a Slightly Slanted Slope
The weight distribution shifts forward when we put our foot in a heel.
While this alters our entire posture and may make our hips appear perkier, it can also cause foot pain over time. The reason for this is that instead of your foot being placed flat on the ground as it should be when walking, your weight is shifted to your balls of your feet. To compensate, the knees and hips push forward, while the back hyperextends to counteract.
That’s why the pain and discomfort we experience from our heels always begins on the balls of our feet. To keep your heel from aching, make sure your body weight is adequately distributed over your foot rather than being centered in the balls. As a result, you must comprehend the concept of incline (aka slope).
The distance between the heel and the sole can be used to calculate the incline, which is not a measurement provided by any merchant or shoe designer. The steeper the heels are, the shorter the distance. The more comfortable the heels are, the longer the distance and the more gradual the incline.
2. Check that the arch of your heels is in line with the arch of your foot.
You must ensure that your arch is appropriately supported in order for your heels to be comfortable. We all know how crucial arch support is, but you may not have connected it to the shape of your shoe arch.
Have you ever observed that when you try on high heels, some of them hurt so much right away that you have to take them off? That’s most likely a hint that the shoe arch’s construction isn’t a good fit for your foot. When there is a mismatch, when you put the heels on, the pressure on your balls of feet increases, and you will feel discomfort almost immediately.
3. Put Silicone Inserts in Place
Dr. Scholls inserts were a lifesaver for me at my wedding, allowing me to walk in high heels all day and dance in them all night.
Silicone inserts keep your foot more stable in the shoe, preventing your feet from rolling forward. As a result, your weight is placed more evenly on your heels than on the balls of your feet, alleviating pain in the ball of your feet. Silicone inserts will be a big relief in this situation because they provide so much support and cushion to the balls of your feet.
I’ve tried a lot of various sorts, but these are the most effective. The key difference is that this one has thicker arch padding, which ensures that your arch is supported and that your feet are more comfortable in the heels.
Because you can’t adjust the inclination or arch of your existing high heels, these inserts will keep them from hurting you and save you from having to throw away all of your painful heels.
I usually buy one pair of silicone inserts for each pair of heels that are more than 3 inches high. Dr. Scholl’s Stylish Step High Heel Relief Insoles are my favorite brand, and they can be found on Amazon. If you use them frequently, they will wear out and lose their stickiness, signaling that it is time to replace them.
The inserts are suitable for all seasons and can be worn with either sandals or boots. You can’t tell you have them in your heels since they’re transparent.
4. Make use of Blister Blocks
Blisters are another prevalent sort of pain we experience when we wear heels. Blisters can occur not just when you wear new shoes, but also when you haven’t worn heels in a long time.
I used to just put on a band aid, but when you’re wearing sandals, they’re a little too visible. These blister blocks were recently spotted on Amazon. Simply massage them on the sensitive areas before putting on the new heels. You will be less likely to get painful blisters as a result of this.
5. Check your shoe size on a regular basis
The most basic foundation for feeling more comfortable in your heels is to wear the correct size shoe. Isn’t this a little too obvious? Who doesn’t know their size, you might wonder?

Third, your feet may change as you get older. This is my mother’s case, and her shoe size has increased from 36 to 37 throughout the years.
All of this is to say that you should remeasure your feet and ensure that you are wearing the correct size.
6. Tape the third and fourth toes together
This is a fantastic suggestion. The soreness in the ball of your feet might be relieved by taping your third and fourth toes together with naked medical tape (counting from the big toe).
Why? Because there is a nerve in that area that causes foot pain. When the nerve is supported by the other toe, it is less stressed.
What if your toes are largely visible since you’re wearing peep toe shoes or sandals? I know, unless you don’t mind people recognizing the tape, this approach might not work in that situation.
If you’re wearing pumps, standard heels, or high heel boots, however, you shouldn’t have any trouble trying this approach and seeing if it helps relieve the pain.

7. Put on a pair of wedges or platform shoes
This is the simplest approach if you enjoy wearing heels. Stilettos are often more uncomfortable than wedges or platform shoes. Wedges give your arch extra support, distributing your weight evenly across your sole and reducing soreness in your balls of your feet. Platform is more comfortable for the same reason: it cushions the balls of your feet and relieves pressure in certain areas.
If you are small (under 5’4′′), you must exercise caution and ensure that the platform of your shoes is not excessively thick. Wedge and platform heels provide additional comfort and support for your feet, but they bulk up your look.
One of the most typical blunders made by shorter girls is that the platform they wear is so thick that it visually shortens their legs.
I prefer wedges to stilettos because they are considerably more comfortable to walk in. However, if the wedge is excessively thick, they have the potential to make your legs appear shorter. If you require a pair of walkable wedges, look for ones with thinner wedges (not necessarily lower) to relieve some of the weight on your feet.
8. Put on your block heels
Block heels provide your heel area extra support and make it more comfy for you.
These are your best bet if you’re heading to an event where you’ll be standing or dancing in high heels for several hours.
Similarly, clunky heels are unflattering for small feet. They add too much weight to your lower half and make you appear shorter because to the thicker heels.
As a result, you must choose between comfort and style, ideally somewhere in the middle.

9. Always have foldable flats on hand
This is a fantastic hack for commuters who must walk longer distances than those who commute by car. So you’ve made the decision that none of your shoes can be hacked. That’s terrible news, but at least you’ll be able to get some new shoes! Here are some ideas for wearing heels that are both comfy and won’t make your feet sing. In a negative way.
1. Put on a pair of heels with a lower heel height
If you respect your feet, stick to a maximum heel height of 3.5 inches. If you go any higher, you might have to take a walk of shame back to your house. (Also known as barefoot wandering across city streets.) Check out some of the adorable options below!
