This Spring/Summer season, gladiator sandals, particularly tall gladiator sandals, have reached an all-time trend high. Are they, nevertheless, simple to put on? Check out my style advice on how to wear gladiator sandals to see for yourself!
On the Spring 2015-2016 catwalks, tall gladiator shoes were everywhere. And, contrary to popular belief, this trendy sandal is a lot easier to style in 2015 than you might imagine! They all looked wonderful, from the most fashionable lace-up gladiators to breathtaking strappy ones! At least, that’s the case for the majority of them.
Given how eye-catching these shoes are, I can understand how it would be simple to avoid this particular shoe fad. So, if you want to be noticed this summer, these are the shoes to wear! They’re also simple to wear in any of the neutral colors they come in.
If you’re a little hesitant about wearing tall gladiators, choose a pair that matches your skin tone. Yes, it’s less ostentatious, but it’s no less wonderful! Here are my top ten ways to wear tall gladiator sandals (and one way not to)!
How to Wear Gladiator Sandals this Summer
1. Shorts and Knee-High Gladiator Sandals
With a pair of tall gladiator shoes, you may dress up any old shorts or denim short shorts.
A pair of looser, distressed/frayed denim shorts will give you a more laid-back, vacation vibe. Your gladiators will seem more clean-cut if you wear a pair of tailored shorts, either short or mid-thigh length. If you think shorts are dull, try them on with a pair of high gladiators to alter your opinion.
2. Romper with Gladiator Sandals
Because rompers are still in style this summer, why not mix one with a pair of high gladiators? It doesn’t matter if the fabric is color blocked, solitary hued, or printed with a pattern. All short jumpsuits look wonderful with these sandals!
3. A Printed Dress and Tall Gladiator Sandals
If you’re brave enough, a colorful, patterned dress can elevate your towering gladiator sandals to new heights. When you pair a high-heeled gladiator sandal with a semi-formal bodycon dress, you’ve got yourself a beautiful night out look!
Keep additional accessories simple because the print and strappy knee-highs already add enough drama.
4. Maxi Skirt
I was recently questioned what the point is of wearing towering gladiators with a long dress since the sandals are ultimately concealed beneath all that fabric. One (or two!) side slits are the answer to that query. That manner, as you walk, your fashionable shoes will stand out. Above, you can see the maxi dress and gladiator combo I’m wearing.
There’s also no reason why you can’t pair your tall gladiator sandals with a maxi dress that conceals your legs. Yes, no one will notice they’re tall gladiators, but they’ll still pass for adorable sandals underneath! And there’s nothing wrong with that.
5. Gladiators and an LBD
The LBD (and certainly at the top of all lists on how to wear gladiator sandals!) is the MOTHER of all dresses to wear with gladiator sandals. Depending on the design of the dress, you can go from festival-ready boho-chic to city cool in a matter of seconds. In any case, your little black dress will keep your gladiators looking stylish, regardless of the type!
Style Tip: Pair a black dress with black gladiators for a strappy splash of shine. In the image above, I really like the strappy high heel tall gladiators with the black slip dress with side part. Such opulence!

6. Tall Gladiator Sandals with a Little White Dress
If you don’t want to wear black in the heat but still want to keep things simple, this is the outfit for you. Then, of course, pair your knee-high gladiators with a small white dress, which is the summer outfit of the moment!
Styling Tip: A crocheted or lace white dress, like the ones featured above, is absolutely on trend.
7. Gladiator Dress with Denim
I’m a great admirer of chambray and denim, so this chambray dress + tall gladiator sandal combo is perfect for me! This is my personal favorite outfit to pair with gladiators, as seen on the Chloe Spring 2015 runway with a very 70s denim dress. Take a look at all of the various shoes that would go well with a denim dress.
Styling Tip: Wear a taupe-y brown colour with the light blue to give the ensemble an earthy feel. Due to the stronger color contrast, black gladiator shoes will give a chambray mini dress a lot more edge.
8. Striped Dress with Gladiator Sandals
Striped dresses, like printed dresses, add more lines to the already strappy, linear sandals. Wear your high gladiators with a striped dress with bolder, contrasting lines or a more subtle stripe pattern.
Any striped dress, such as a t-shirt dress, shirt dress, or other striped style, will suffice. The combination of a tall gladiator sandal and a striped dress is a refreshing change from the traditional one-color outfit!
9. High Gladiators Shirt Dress
The shirt dress is another incredibly popular outfit in 2015. I’ve seen the large boyfriend shirt (dress) paired with a variety of shoes, boots, and sandals. So why not add some drama to your look by wearing a pair of strappy tall gladiators? The outfit in the middle is my personal favorite (image above). How
10. Astonishing Tall Gladiator Sandal Design
I discovered a couple unusual, yet intriguing, ways to wear tall gladiators.
- I’m not sure how I feel about Kourtney Kardashian’s denim shorts with towering gladiators that have been ruined. I don’t adore it, but I also don’t despise it. If short shorts aren’t your thing, this is a unique way to wear gladiators with longer shorts!
- A long fringe skirt paired with a pair of black towering gladiators may be stunning! I really enjoy the visual play with the lines.
- Although I’m not keen on the tall gladiators concealing the midi dress. But I adore the unexpected dimensions and how the gladiator straps blend into the skirt without a break.
How NOT to wear Tall Gladiator Sandals
Over Jeans & Pants: Tall Gladiators
Wearing tall gladiators has a limited number of ways to go wrong. But there’s one look I haven’t seen a lot of: towering gladiator shoes paired with slim pants. Strangely enough, I have a feeling this may be the next step in gladiator styling, but let’s hope not, shall we? So far, I’ve seen this styling on a few of designer runways and one Pinterest fashion blogger look. Thankfully, that’s all there is to it for the time being, ha!
However, in my opinion, this is a massive no-no when it comes to how to wear gladiator sandals. I understand that tucking your skinnies into your knee or thigh high gladiators may create a certain level of drama for the creative director’s runway, but tucking your skinnies into your knee or thigh high gladiators is just plain strange in terms of street dressing. Instead, I’d recommend wearing them with low gladiators.
